Alvelac — How and Why It Works?

Alvelac™ is a porous PLGA (poly lactic co glycolic acid) scaffold produced using a proprietary and patented technology. PLGA, a non-toxic, biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, is FDA approved. (Figure 1)

Alvelac™ offers a “Green” solution as it is of non-animal origin (synthetic in nature), safe, biocompatible and biodegradable alloplast which overcomes the concerns of conventional graft materials in the body. There is no need to worry about having to harvest bone from another part of the body or dealing with body immune system’s reaction with the graft materials.

Alvelac™ is intended to help maintain the original height and width of the socket so that there would be minimal bone loss and a good bone structure maintained. It is designed to maintain socket height and width, which will allow for natural bone healing (Figure 2). In addition, it will be resorbed in approximately two to six months.

Furthermore, it will also help to facilitate future dental procedures, such as implants, dentures or bridges. There would be obvious benefit for any patients contemplating dental implants as there would be less of a need for additional surgery like bone grafting for inadequate bony configuration after dental extraction.
